About DOC EDITIONS
DOC EDITIONS is a publishing initiative dedicated to exploring the rich and complex processes behind documentary filmmaking. We initiated DOC EDITIONS with the intention of publishing works that expand upon the practice of filmmaking. DOC EDITIONS also serves as a space for sharing: the knowledge, insights, and materials that emerge during the making of a documentary but often remain unseen or unexplored.
Our idea is that the process of documentary filmmaking generates forms of knowledge and perspectives that deserve to be documented and shared:
- Unseen Narratives: Materials that didn’t make it into the final film but hold their own stories, unfolding new ways to engage with the subject matter.
- Process Reflections: Explorations of the creative, ethical, and methodological decisions behind the making of a documentary.
- Alternative Approaches: Formats like text, image, or sound, can offer complementary or contrasting perspectives to a film.
DOC EDITIONS aims to grow into a space for other documentary filmmakers to share their own process-driven works and to be a home for these valuable fragments of research and creation.
Our publications invite readers to step behind the scenes, into the layers of thought, experimentation that shape the final documentary. Each edition is a standalone piece, but together, they can create a constellation of voices, subjects, and approaches, enriching our understanding of the documentary form.
DOC EDITIONS is a publishing initiative and a space for dialogue between filmmakers, between film and the printed page, between the visual and the textual, and between the seen and the unseen.
DOC EDITIONS was initiated by Eliane Esther Bots and Annette Bool.
